The term martial arts refers to systems of combat or self-defense, the traditional form of which include karate, judo, and king fu. The oldest artist's rendering of martial arts has been dated back to 3000 BC in Mesopotamia in ancient Egypt, and fencing was the topic of a manual in 1639. There are various classes of martial, but the two major divisions are armed -- which includes melee weapons such as nunchucks and polearms -- and unarmed, which includes kicking, punching, judo, aikido, and jujitsu.
