The focus of this portion of our guide is on auto rental companies, such as car, van, and truck rentals.

The larger car rental companies include Hertz Global Holdings, which operates Its own Hertz Auto Rental brand, as well as Dollar Rent A Car, Firefly Car Rental, and Thrifty Car Rental. Enterprise Holdings is the parent company of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo Rent a Car, and National Car Rental, while Avis Budget Group operates Avis Car Rental, Budget Rent a Car, Budget Truck Rental, Payless Car Rental, and Zipcar, as well as some smaller brands (Apex Car Rentals, AmicoBlue, France Cars, Maggiore Group, MoriniRent, TurisCar, and TurisPrime).

Major truck rental companies include U-Haul. U-Haul rents trucks, trailers, vans, self-storage units, and other pieces of equipment. The Penske Corporation is an American transportation services company involved in a variety of services, including Penske Truck Leasing, which is engaged in truck leasing, truck rentals, truck fleet maintenance, and used truck sales. Budget Truck Rental is the second-largest truck rental company in the United States. Owned and operated by Avis Budget Group, Budget also sells moving supplies. Although Ryder specializes in fleet, supply chain, and transportation management, it also offers full-service leasing and rentals of light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty vans and trucks.

Car rental companies rent automobiles to the public for short periods of time, usually from a few hours to a few weeks. The larger car rental companies are usually structured so that users can return a vehicle to a different location, frequently located near airports. These companies usually serve people who need a temporary vehicle, either because their own car is in the shop or because they are traveling. Some people will opt to rent a car for long trips, or they might fly to a destination, renting a car at the destination city. Others might rent a car or van larger than their own to move to a nearby location or transport property from one place to another. Some auto rental companies also offer motorcycles, vans, or trucks.

Common clients for truck rental companies are people who are moving from one location to another, and who have determined that renting a truck would be cheaper than hiring a moving company. Trucks may also be rented as delivery vehicles, either because a company has an urgent need for an extra delivery vehicle or has not yet established its own fleet.

Topics related to the industry itself may be listed here, along with websites representing the larger companies. Local rentals should be listed in the appropriate Local & Global category, however.
