Tetracyclines are a subclass of polyketides which are a group of broad spectrum antibiotics named for their derivation (-ine) of four (tetra-) hydrocarbon rings (-cycl-). Once thought to be the savior of all those in need of antibiotics, they have been rendered far less effective in this day and age due to the onslaught of drug-resistant infections.
