Actress Dixie Carter (May 25, 1939 - April 10, 2010) was born in McLemoresville, Tennessee and grew up primarily in Memphis. She went to college in Knoxville and in Memphis. She played Julia Sugarbaker in “Designing Women,” also appeared regularly on “Family Law,” “Desperate Housewives,” and the soap opera “The Edge of Night.” She is on record as having been a libertarian-leaning Republican. She was married three times, the final time in 1984 to Hal Holbrook to whom she remained married until her death, and had two children. She died in Houston, Texas from complications from endometrial cancer.
