The musician known as Ronnie James Dio was actually named Ronald James Padavona. He was born on July 10, 1942 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and died on May 16, 2010 of stomach cancer. He was a pioneer in heavy metal, the genre in which is gained fame, having performed with groups including Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band, Dio. He claimed that he was most influenced by Mario Lanza, and it is he who popularized the hand gesture known as the “metal horns.”
