Sarah Michelle Gellar was born April 14, 1977 in New York City. Her parents were Jewish, though they celebrated Christmas when she was a child. They were divorced when she was seven, and she was raised by her mother, causing her to be estranged from her father until he died of liver cancer in 2001. She was discovered by an agent in a Manhattan restaurant when she was four, and she became a model at the same time she appeared on television. She married Freddie Prinze, Jr. in Mexico in 2002, and in 2007, she legally changed her last name to his. They live in Los Angeles with their two children.
