Her mother was an opera singer and her father an oil company executive who was a minor politician as well. Her first name is Arabic for "safe". She was diagnosed with dyslexia as a child, and she went on to attend university in Mexico City. She is a naturalized citizen of the United States. She and her fiancé, a French billionaire, became parents of a baby girl in 2007. They broke up in 2008 but were reconciled and married on Valentines Day 2009 in Paris, France.
