Dustin Hoffman was born on August 8, 1937 in Los Angeles, California. His father was a prop supervisor for movies. His grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Ukraine and Romania, though Dustin himself was not brought up observant. He enrolled in Santa Monica College on his way to studying medicine but left after a year to pursue acting, despite the fact that his aunt told him that he was not good looking enough to be an actor. His first big role, in "The Graduate," won him wide acclaim, and he has been a star ever since. He is married to his second wife. He has six children, including his first wife's daughter whom he adopted. All his children from his current marriage have had bat or bar mitzvahs, and he has said he is now an observant Jew.
