Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem, Israel, the only child of an American mother and Israeli father who is a gynecologist and fertility specialist. She holds dual citizenship, both American and Israeli. When she was three years old, they moved to Washington, D.C., then relocated to Connecticut and finally to Jericho, on Long Island. In 2011, she and her then-partner Benjamin Millepied had a son. On August 4, 2012, they were married in a Jewish ceremony in Big Sur, California. They live in Paris, France.
