Often known as the Antilles, the Caribbean consists of the Caribbean Sea and its islands, as well as the coasts which surround the region, and it is made up of more than 7,000 islands, reefs, and cays. It is often referred to as the West Indies, which it was called after Christopher Columbus, believing he had found India, landed there in 1492.
