Hospitals serving the Edinburgh area include the Royal Infirmary of Scotland, Western General Hospital, Royal Edinburgh Hospital, and the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People. Established in 1729, the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is the oldest voluntary hospital in Scotland. In 1897, it was the largest voluntary hospital in the United Kingdom. Currently managed by NHS Lothian, it is a teaching hospital for the University of Edinburgh Medical School.

Also managed by NHS Lothian, Western General Hospital was opened in 1868 as the St. Cuthberts and Canongate Poorhouse, and served primarily as a workhouse but with some hospital functions. During World War I, the building was requisitioned by the War Office to form the 2nd Scottish General Hospital, a medical facility for the treatment of military casualties. Briefly returning to use as a poorhouse following the war, it was converted into a hospital in 1927, joining the National Health Service in 1948.

Another NHS Lothian facility, Royal Edinburgh Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. Opening as the Edinburgh Lunatic Asylum in 1813, the facility joined the NHS in 1948.

Specialising in paediatric healthcare, the Royal Hospital for Children and Young People is on the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh campus in the Little France area of Edinburgh. Managed by NHS Lothian, it treats children from birth to around eighteen years of age.
