As the capital city of Scotland, there are a lot of places to stay in Edinburgh, but it can be expensive.

Edinburgh is a diverse city, so there are a lot of different areas to choose from. The best neighborhood depends on what you're looking for, whether you're traveling alone, as a couple, or with a family. Your budget should also be accounted for.

The City Centre is in the middle of everything, but it's pricey. Edinburgh's most expensive and prestigious hotels are in the City Centre. These include the Balmoral Hotel, a Rocco Forte Hotel, attached to the Edinburgh Waverley railway station. Near Edinburgh Castle is the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa.

Similarly, Old Town offers a lot of history, impressive architecture, and attractions, but it could be out of bounds for someone on a budget. The Old Town area is a small neighborhood centred around the Royal Mile. In this area is the Radisson Collection Hotel. Offering views of Arthur's Seat, it is within easy walking distance of Edinburgh Castle, Camera Obscura, and World of Illusions. Another good choice in Old Town is the Dunstane Houses on the western part of Old Town. This is a family-operated guest facility with two Victorian buildings, known as Dunstane House and Hampton House.

New Town could be a good choice for singles, as it's loaded with places to shop, eat, or drink. it's also a busy neighborhood.

The Stockbridge or Dean Village area is pretty but upmarket. These were formerly small villages just outside of Edinburgh and, although they have been incorporated into the city, they have retained a detached flavour. A little more reasonably priced, you'll find several restaurants and bars there. The Raeburn Hotel and the Georgian House Hotel are in this area.

Leith is a great neighborhood to meet locals, and it's also less expensive than other parts of the city. Situated in the north part of Edinburgh, it includes the city's port, as well as the Royal Yacht Britannia. The Malmaison Edinburgh Hotel is on the Leith waterfront.

To the west of the city centre is Murrayfield, which includes Murrayfield Stadium, home to the Scottish national rugby union team, as well as the Murrayfield Ice Rink, which hosts the Edinburgh Capitals ice hockey team. It is an affluent area that includes the Murrayfield Hotel.

For overnight stays, there are several choices around the Edinburgh Airport.

These are a few of the better-known hotels in Edinburgh, but there are several other places to stay in the city. For those on a tight budget, particularly singles, Edinburgh has hostels with ten or more beds, many of which also offer private rooms. There are budget hotels, as well. Airbnb is active in Edinburgh, although these are not necessarily inexpensive. In the warmer months, camping is available in Loch Lomond National Park and some other sites, and overnight parking can be found for free or for a fee via a mobile application.
