The City of Greater Sudbury was created in 2001 by consolidating the cities and towns of the former Regional Municipality of Sudbury, as well as previously unincorporated townships, making it the largest city in Ontario. Greater Sudbury is one of five Ontario cities that are not part of any district, country or regional municipals, but constitute their own independent census divisions. The region was first settled as Sainte-Anne-des-Pins, established as a lumber camp.
