Located in southern Ontario, Kitchener was known as Berlin until its name was changed in 1916, when residents were prompted to separate themselves from its German name by World War I, naming the town after Herbert Kitchener, who died that year while serving as Secretary of State of the United Kingdom. The city is the seat of the Waterloo Regional Municipality.
