The largest city in Canada, Toronto is the provincial capital of Ontario. It is part of what is known as Ontario's Golden Horseshoe which contains approximately one-fourth of the country's population. Although founded by French traders in 1750, it was abandoned in 1759. It was purchased by the British from the Mississaugas in what has come to be known as the Toronto Purchase. It was incorporated as the City of Toronto in 1834.
