Sherbrooke, in southern Quebec, is situated at the confluence of the Magog and Saint-François Rivers. It was first settled in 1793 by American loyalists from New York. One of the settlers was Gilbert Hyatt, from New York. Gilbert built a flour mill, and the village was named Hyatt's Mills. In 1818, it was renamed in honor of Governor General Sir John Sherbrooke.
