Saskatchewan, named for the Saskatchewan River, became one of Canada's Prairie Provinces in 1905. Beef cattle production and mining are major industries as well as oil and natural gas. However, agriculture, fishing, hunting, and forestry also play and important role in Saskatchewan’s economy. Its largest city is Saskatoon, and its capital is Regina which is the home of Saskatchewan’s only professional sports franchise, the football team called the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
