Saint Kitts and Nevis are part of the Leeward Islands, and were among the first islands in the Caribbean to be settled by Europeans. Together, they comprise the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, commonly known as St. Kitts and Nevis. The islands are of volcanic origin, with large central peaks covered in tropical rainforest, while the steeper slopes leading to these peaks are largely uninhabited. The populations of both islands are concentrated by the sea, where the terrain flattens.
