Birmingham, Alabama, is the county seat of Jefferson County, but is partially in Shelby County as well. It is the largest city in the state, and its nicknames are "The Magic City," and "The Pittsburgh of the South." It was at the center of the civil rights movement of the mid-20th century and was, at that time, commonly referred to as Bombingham due to numerous bombings that took place there, and it was from that jail that Martin Luther King wrote his famous "Letter from Birmingham."
