Located in both Limestone and Morgan Counties, Decatur, Alabama, is known by numerous nicknames, including the River City and Chicago of the South and is the county seat of Morgan County. It was originally known as Rhodes Ferry Landing, after the early settler who operated a ferry on the Tennessee River, but was incorporated as Decatur in 1821 after President Monroe directed that it be named after Stephen Decatur, who was killed in a duel in 1820.
