Greenville, Alabama, known as the Camellia City, is the county seat of Butler County. The city is where the movement to change the official Alabama state flower from the goldenrod to the camellia began. Settled in 1819, it was named in honor of the oak forests which reminded the settlers of Greenville, South Carolina. During World War II, it was home to a satellite camp for German prisoners of war.
