Jackson, Alabama, located in Clarke County, was founded in 1816 and was originally named Pine Level. It was later renamed to Republicville, and finally was given its current name in honor of the President Andrew Jackson. During the American War Between the States, it was guarded by Fort Carney, just south of town. The cannon which used to be at the fort is now on the lawn in front of City Hall.
