Settled by cotton farmers at the turn of the 20th century, the city of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, is situated in Colbert County. In 1918, President Wilson approved the building of two nitrate plants and a dam in the area. At one point more than 18,000 workers were employed there. In the 1960s, FAME recording studios transformed Muscle Shoals, and famous musicians including Aretha Frankilin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Osmonds, and Duane Allman recorded there.
