Opelika is in Lee County, in the east-central part of the state. The first settlers of the area called their community Lebenon. After the native people were removed by force, the area became known as Opelika, taken from a Muskogee word meaning "large swamp". With the coming of the railroad in the 1840s, Opelika grew rapidly, and was incorporated as a town in 1854. After the American Civil War, the legislature created Lee County, and named Opelika the county seat, as it is today.
