The small city of Arcata, located on the Arcata Bay in Humboldt County, is a college town, home to Humboldt State University. First named Union, it was created as a port and provisioning center for the gold mines in the area. Ten years later, it was renamed Arcata, which is an anglicized form of the native word which means “a place to land.”
