Carmel-by-the-Sea, generally known more simply as Carmel, is a small town on California's Monterey Peninsula. Although the region was inhabited by a succession of Native American tribes, then visited by the Spanish as early as 1542, the town was developed in 1904 by the Carmel Development Company, and incorporated in 1916.
