Once part of the state of Alta California in the colony of New Spain, Castro Valley is named in honor of Don Guillermo Castro, a cattle rancher and soldier in the Mexican army. It is just part of the 28,000 acre land grant which was given to him, originally including what is now Hayward and San Lorenzo. Don Castro eventually lost all of his land gambling, but the Valley retains his name today.
