The California city of Delano, world famous for its table grapes, is in Kern County and hosts two state prisons, North Kern and Kern Valley. The city is pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable. It was founded in 1873 as a railroad town and was named after the Secretary of the Interior at that time, Columbus Delano. The city is known for being the epicenter of the grape boycott which began there in 1965, and for the birth of the UFW.
