Hollywood, California, is not a itself a town but a district in the City of Los Angeles. It has no government of its own, though it does have an honorary mayor. In 1853, there was but one adobe building in the district. By 1900, the area had a population of about 500. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1903, but in 1910, it was annexed into Los Angeles. It is known as the home of the modern movie industry, and its name is often used as a synonym for hedonism and excess.
