The largest city in the state of California, Los Angeles was named after a very long Spanish phrase which alludes to Mary, the mother of Christ. It was bought from Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and it was incorporated in 1850, several months before California entered the Union.
