San Francisco, the city, is the only entity within the county of San Francisco. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the country, with more then 7 million people living 46.7 square miles. Named for St. Francis of Assisi, the city was built on money from the 49ers of the Gold Rush era. It was almost completely rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake and resulting fire, which burned for days. The most famous landmarks of the City are the Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, and the cable cars.
