The city of Ukiah was founded in 1856 as part of Sonoma County. In 1859, the California state legislature created Mendocino County and chose Ukiah to serve as its seat. It gained national attention in 1874 when part of the white nationalist group, The Order, robbed a Brink’s armored car for $3.6 million in the city.
