Breckenridge is located in Summit County, in north-central Colorado, the heart of the Rocky Mountains. While there were a few white trappers and mountain men in the area as early as 1840, the Pike's Peak gold rush of 1859 drew people in sufficient numbers to establish a town. Breckinridge was founded by a prospecting company owned by General George Spencer, and named after Vice President John Breckinridge.
