Organized in 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, Durango has grown to become the seat of La Plata County, and its most populous city. Situated in the Animas River Valley, with the river running through the town, and mountains all around it, Durango is a popular site for outdoor activities during all seasons.
