The city of Fruita was organized in 1884 by William Pabor, who formed the Fruita Town and Land Company for the purpose of selling town lots. Its name was chosen because Pabor recognized the land's potential for fruit production, mostly apples and pears. The city is a part of Mesa County, Colorado.
