Its most populous city, and the seat of Weld County, Greeley is located approximately fifty miles northeast of Denver, Colorado. As the city is bordered by Evans and Garden City, the three together are often incorrectly identified as Greeley. Founded in 1869 as Union Colony, the locality was renamed in honor of Horace Greeley, the editor of the New York Times, a mentor of one of Greeley's founders.
