The first settler in the area that was to become New Castle was Jasper Ward, who built a cabin on the west bank of Elk Creek, where it joins the Colorado River, then known as the Grand River. Before incorporating as New Castle in 1888, the town was known as Grand Butte and Chapman. The locality is the site of a mine fire that has been burning since 1899.
