Tallahassee is the capital of the State of Florida and the seat of Leon County, as well as home to Florida State University, Florida A&M University, Tallahassee Community College, and branches of Barry University and Flagler College. During the Civil War, Tallahassee was the only Confederate state capital east of the Mississippi not captured by Union forces.
