Clayton is a small city in Rabun County, Georgia. The area upon which the city would be built was known as the Dividings, because it was at the intersection of three significant Cherokee trails, two of which would later become US 441 and US 76. Clayton was incorporated in 1823 as Claytonville, later shortened, after a Georgia congressman and judge, Augustin S. Clayton.
