Located in Jackson County, in the northeastern part of Georgia, Commerce was first settled by Europeans in 1784, when William Dunson, a German immigrant, was awarded a land grant on Little Sandy Creek. The first settlement was known as Groaning Rock, which was later changed to Harmony Grove, which was incorporated in 1884, the reincorporated as Commerce in 1904.
