Located at or near the center of the state, Macon is the seat of Bibb County, Georgia. The city grew up around the site of Fort Benjamin Hawkins, built in 1806 on the fall line of the Ocmulgee River. The original settlement took the name of the fort but was later renamed Newtown. After Bibb County was established in 1822, the city was officially named Macon, for North Carolina statesman Nathaniel Macon.
