Marietta is the seat of Cobb County, Georgia. The exact time of its first settlement is unknown, but homes had been built by early setters near the Cherokee town of Kennesaw by 1824. The first plat was laid out in 1833, and the town was recognized by the Georgia Legislature in 1864.
