Perry is the seat of Houston County, although portions of the city lie in Peach County. Established in 1823 near the center of Houston County, the town was first known as Wattsville but was renamed when it was incorporated in 1824, to honor Commodore Oliver Perry, a hero of the War of 1812. The Georgia National Fair is hosted by Perry each year.
