Stone Mountain, Georgia is the site of the largest bas relief sculpture in the world, the Confederate Memorial Carving which depicts Confederate President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson, astride their horses. The sculptor who was commissioned to do the piece left the project in 1923 and went on to finish Mt. Rushmore. The project was stalled a few times, and was finally completed in 1972. Stone Mountain is mentioned in Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
