Suwanee, Georgia, in Gwinnet County, is named after the Indian word which means "echo." It became a recognized town in 1838 and began to grow after 1869, when the Georgia Airline Railroad and Southern Railroad came through the area, and a depot was built. Incorporated in 1949, it remained an agricultural-based town well into the 1970s when the highway system, particularly I-85 was finally seen as an opportunity and commercial development occurred in order to take advantage of travelers.
