Located in southern Georgia, Tifton got its start in the mid 1800s, when Captain Henry Harding Tift came from Mystic, Connecticut to harvest timber for his family's shipbuilding business. Tifts Town, as it as first known, grew up around the sawmill and train tracks that Tift had built to prepare and ship his lumber to market. The town followed the same basic layout as found in Mystic. Tifton grew to become the seat of Tift County, Georgia.
