Located along the Washington/Idaho border, Moscow is the seat of Latah County, Idaho. The area was settled shortly after the American Civil War, at which time it was known as Hog Heaven. When the first post office opened in 1872, it was called Paradise Valley, for the creek that runs through town, but was changed to Moscow in 1875, for the city in Russia. It is the home of the University of Idaho.
