Evanston is a city and a township in Cook County, located directly north of Chicago, east of Skokie and south of Wilmette, Illinois. Settled in 1836, it was first known as Ridgeville. In 1851, a group of Methodists founded Northwestern University and chose the area as its home, at which time the community was renamed in honor of John Evans, one of the Methodist leaders involved in the effort.
