The village of Gurnee, Illinois is situated in Lake County. The first settlers arrived in 1836, and the village was called Aux Plaines, after the nearby river. In 1854, the Chicago & Milwaukee Railroad ran its first train through town, and in 1870, the village was renamed O'Plaine. It was finally renamed Gurnee after the train station, which was itself named in honor of Walter S. Gurnee, one of the directors of the railroad, who, incidentally, never set foot in the village.
