Anderson, the seat of Madison County, Indiana, was named for Chief William Anderson, whose mother was a Delaware Indian and whose father was of Swedish descent. Settlers coming to the area referred to the village as "Anderson Town". Later it was known as "Andersontown", which was shortened by the Indiana legislature to "Anderson" in 1844.
